I've tried to start this a couple of times, its just tough... How to phrase? There is so, so much anger in the world today, and its just escalating. Why not try to find a middle ground?
I went on Facebook this morning, to be greeted by a post someone made announcing that it is, apparently pro-life cupcake day. Which is to celebrate the birthday of aborted fetuses. Oooookaaaaay. Basically it is for all the unborn babies who never had a birthday. And that message oogs me out just a tad. But it also bothers me that both pro-choicers and pro-lifers don't see the validity of each other's arguments. They each get sucked into a little circle that starts going around in anger and circular reasoning....
The pro-life group at my church does do some very good things, they work with women who decided to have their babies, to set them up with the necessities of life... but they do also do some very strong pro-life marches, praying at 'abortion mills', and that makes me uncomfortable. Because I do believe in having choice. But having a baby and giving it up for adoption is also hard.
Pro-choice believes that no-one regrets having an abortion, that it is just a quick medical procedure and isn't traumatic. When it really can affect someone's life. When it really does end the potential for another human being. But sometimes you do have to make that choice. And there isn't always counseling.
I would just like to see a group come out that is in the middle. That won't vilify women for having abortions, but, at the same time, won't make abortion the 'of course' option.
I was reading some of my favorite blogs, and found an announcement on one that employers are going to be able to penalise their employees now for being 'unhealthy', for being overweight, or smoking, or not having regular preventative checkups. So we've just made it ok to discriminate against fat people. This again is one of those polarizing issues, where there are the rabid 'skinny at all costs' camps, and the 'I am fat, love me' camps.
Where is the middle ground? *sigh* It all seems to be about extremes, more and more. Lets try to meet in the middle. Hug a fat person, talk to someone from the other side. We are all human, we all have feelings... can we stop ridiculing beliefs and start dialoging?
